Carhartt In A Global Economy

Monday, October 5, 2009 by Carhartt Blog Team
To remain competitive in a global economy, Carhartt upholds a balanced approach to manufacturing by owning, operating and sourcing through facilities in the United States, Mexico and globally. Although our level of U.S. production is not as high as it once was, Carhartt still maintains sewing, distribution, cutting and administrative facilities in the United States. We stand behind the quality of our products and continue to manufacture garments that exceed industry standards for durability, comfort and quality of construction.

I will no longer buy carharrt. I started buying your product because it was made in america.

I don't love this idea. It isn't though your products are bargain priced. I pay a high price for a high quality item. Producing items in other countries for import hasn't lead to any price reductions so why not continue to make your products here?

I agree with the statements above. I have bought Carhartt products in the past due to them being made in America. I have a Carhartt Santa Fe jacket taht I've worn proudly since 1992 that is made in the USA. It isn't the same when it is made on another continent. Mexico I can stomach, but overseas is a bit much. I will be looking to other companies' products for work wear made in the U.S. I would think Carhartt would want to support the American workers who have bought their products for the past century.

My sentiments echo those expressed above. This Christmas and beyond, there will be no "imported" items under our tree!

prices have not gone down im sure just like the rest quality will go. alot of guys i work with in the oil field are not happy as we bought your clothes because they were made in america.

To bad your position is to support imports, and not the people in the USA who have made the name Carhartt related to hard work. My sons and I have worn Carhartt for years. Sorry to leave a tradition behind.

was considering buying a new jacket for winter..sandstone ridge...but will look elsewhere now that i see its made overseas....posers

I agree with the posts above,as a union electrican that was a given when you wore coats or bibs they were always Carhartt. We wore them proud because they were union made in the USA.Thru the last 10 years Carhartt has slowly caved in on the American people. About the only thing left that was made in the USA was their outer wear. Now you can't even find a coat or bibs made in the USA. I didn't mind paying the extra cost for your goods, because they were union made. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay the same price for foregin made crap. Carhartt you have really let the American people down!!!!

I am looking for American made clothing. That is, made in USA. I wasted my time checking out this website. Carhartt use to be American made. Too many Americans are unemployed. I am not interested in helping foreign countries economics. We need to keep Americans working. No foreign clothing on this American.

Used to have a Detroit sandstone finish jacket that I wouldn't stop wearing even when the cuffs were all frayed out.. it was just getting broken in at that point. Someone else must have dug it as it was stolen; in a way can't blame them. It's been a few years, wanted the same style jacket so bought a new one... this one wasn't the same quality, I could tell from the moment I took it out of the box. Doesn't feel as heavy, zipper is flimsier, and the snaps aren't lined up right on the sleeves... then I looked at the tag... Mexico. Great. What gives, Carhartt? No more of my hard earned cash until you bring it home and up the quality. Leave this brand to the ignorant and uneducated. What's next, sales at Wally World?

Same goes for us, my husband refuses to buy a Carhartts jacket with a "made in China" label. But remember folks--it is up to all of us and our friends and neighbors to stop buying non-USA products and to check labels! Carhartt and everyone else gets away with this, because most consumers buy without thinking first. Always read your labels & vote with your dollar!

I agree with all of you, I am only a real estate appraiser but I still have been wearing Carhart coats for the past 10 years. Now I have a couple in my company that is work out and I got to buy new ones and what does the tag say? Made in..... with some USA materials, this a a crazy way of trying to justify not being made in USA. I guess if I cannot find a USA made one then I will have to search for another company. I hope this company and all others get the point.

Well it looks like I was not the only buyer tricked into buying foreign made junk. The Carhartt name used to mean USA made, not anymore. The quality has suffered and so has their image. I will not purchase anymore Carhartt. Not only do they not care about supporting the USA workers, they won't even give me the courtesy of a reply to my emails.

Barry, please let us know if there is something specific we can help you with. We've also sent you an email to request more details on any issues you may have.

What is confusing to me is that Carhartt will apparently continue to make some products in the USA but is discontinuing its program allowing purchasers to differentiate between the domestic and foriegn products. I have numerous Carhartt products purchased through internet sites that were able to let consumers know where the products were made. Many of these sites are now going to stop doing business with Carhartt. How does this make sense? Cahartt is deliberately thumbing its' nose at loyal customers like me. Are we supposed to go to Sears and plow through dozens of pairs of jeans to find one made here? With the proliferation of internet marketing, it just doesn't make sense. It is very sad.

Seam like a company that clothes the U.S. worker would want their product made by one. You just lost another long time customer. Happy New Year!

I really have enjoyed buying and wearing your clothing for the last 25 or so years. I work in the printing industry near the city of Dearborn and have always taken pride when printing your catalogs and ads. The local connection was something special. Now I hear that the "Union Labels" and "Made in the U.S.A." tags are gone? If this is true, it is a very sad affair. I will be looking to replace my worn out Detroit jacket (Made in the USA), possibly with a Jackson coat, if i don't see that "USA" tag, i won't be buying. I will sadly spread the word around, as most of the guys, and gals, that I work with, own some of your products. I am hearing that your quality is suffering also? At your prices, that is not a smart business move.

I went to my local Ace Hardware to buy my husband some new work pants and noticed right away the material was not as heavy as it once was. I looked at the label, and to my dismay, found the work pants no longer were made in the USA but the price was still the same. How extremely disappointing this is to my family. My children wear Carhart jackets and bibs and my husband swears by the quality. I am afraid my family will no longer support a company that will no longer support American workers.

I run into many old-timers who have Carhartt coats manufactured before production went south of the border. The finish quality of the jackets and the weight of the materials is outstanding. The new coats are so-so. The members of our union have noticed Carhartt's backpedaling on supporting the working men and women of the United States. Everyone I talk to is taking their business elsewhere. It isn't right to support a company that doesn't support United States labor.

I am a Union Carpenter, have been for 21 years now. Have always worn Carhartt bibs and jackets. Last 2 pair of bibs i purchased have had zipper problems within a month. Use to be proud to by your Union Made in the USA products, Seems as if that is no more. Don't believe I will be wearing Carhartt much longer!!!!!!!!
Saturday, January 23, 2010 by Brad Nolan:
Union Electrician, been buying carhartt for the past 20 years, last pair of bibs with the pouches now have sharked tooth zippers instead of buttons in the crotch! Made in Mexico! No Union Label! It is sadly the last pair I will own. I would like my money back If I could.

All bib overalls were switched to a zipper-fly closure in 2004 due to popular deman. We are sorry that you are not happy with the fly closure of our bib overalls, and have forwarded your comment to our Product Design Department as a suggestion.

I was just looking at a Carhartt sweatshirt when I realized it wasn't made in the USA! I guess I don't need another imported garment. I'm sorry that I can't recommend the brand to people looking for USA goods anymore.

When I can no longer find the 'Crafted with Pride in USA' in my Carhartt, I will cease to buy them!
Sunday, February 21, 2010 by Robert:
I will be joining the boycott of carhartt and their foreign made goods. I am a union electrician and I will be letting my co-workers know about your decision to manufacture goods outside the U.S.
Monday, February 22, 2010 by Dale N.:
After spending thousands of dollars and supporting carhartt clothing for almost 30 years I am done with them. If they can't support the American economy I WILL NOT support them !
Thursday, March 4, 2010 by R Sparks:
Sad. My story is very similar to numerous other posts, and have no interest in buying imported Carharrts.
Sunday, March 7, 2010 by Kay :
I'm with the rest of the commenters. Carhartt products are expensive, but we've been willing to pay more to get American-made products. We won't support foreign-made goods just because they bear the Carhartt mark. Think again, guys!

I have been a carhartt customer since 1985 when I bought my first carpenter bibs.I am a union carpenter and was always glad to see the union label on your clothing. I am very disappointed to see you no longer make carpenter bibs and even more disappointed that your clothing is no longer made by american workers! I will no longer buy your imported clothing!
